What is an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is a plain Markdown document placed at the root of your website — for example yourdomain.com/llms.txt — that gives large language models a clean, concise summary of your site. Where robots.txt tells crawlers what they may visit and sitemap.xml lists every URL, llms.txt explains what your site actually is: a short title, a one- or two-sentence description, the key features or topics you cover, and links to your most important pages. It is a proposed standard designed specifically for AI systems, and adoption is growing quickly among SaaS products, documentation sites and publishers.
AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews do not read web pages the way people do. Modern websites are full of navigation menus, cookie banners, scripts and layout markup that waste a model's limited context window and make it harder to find the content that matters. A well-written llms.txt removes that noise. It hands AI bots a curated, human-readable map of your site in the format they handle best — Markdown — so they can understand your product, quote you accurately and link to the right pages when users ask related questions.
This is the heart of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): making sure AI-driven search engines can find, understand and cite your content. Traditional SEO helps you rank in a list of blue links; GEO helps you appear inside the answer itself. An llms.txt file works alongside other GEO signals — clean JSON-LD schema markup, AI crawler rules in robots.txt and content that renders in static HTML — to increase the chance that AI models describe your brand correctly instead of guessing from fragments of text.
The free LLMs.txt Checker fetches /llms.txt from the domain you enter and verifies it is publicly reachable. It also checks whether your robots.txt allows the major AI user-agents (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others), detects your structured data, and measures how much readable text your HTML serves. All of these results feed into the GEO readiness score inside the full Your SEO Analyzer report, together with meta tags, Core Web Vitals, sitemap status and security headers.
No llms.txt yet? Creating one takes minutes. Start with a heading containing your site or brand name, add a short summary in a blockquote, list your main features as bullet points, and link to your key pages with descriptive anchor text. Upload the file to the root of your site, make sure it returns 200 OK, and run this checker again. Everything is free, requires no account and returns results in seconds — paste a URL above to see how AI-ready your website really is.

What this llms.txt checker does
The checker requests /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt from your domain, previews their Markdown content and parses robots.txt for rules targeting AI crawlers: GPTBot (OpenAI training), OAI-SearchBot (SearchGPT), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and CCBot (Common Crawl). Results are combined into a 0–100 Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) score.
Why llms.txt and GEO matter
Large language models answer questions by reading and summarising the web. A concise llms.txt file gives them a curated map of your most important pages, while clear robots.txt rules decide which AI bots may read your content at all.
How to fix common GEO issues
No llms.txt: create one at the site root with an H1 site name, a one-line summary and a list of key pages — the built-in template generator gives you a starting point. AI bots blocked: remove Disallow rules for the crawlers you want to be cited by. Thin static HTML: render key content server-side so bots that don't execute JavaScript can still read it.
